Choosing the right company to host your website is a crucial decision. Here are five essential questions you should perhaps be asking:

  1. Do your potential web hoster's servers have the right ingredients for your website? What can they place in your CGI bin? Can they handle PERL scripting? This is essential if you want to include forms. Can they accommodate SQL databases? These are important for many things, including username and password entry?

  1. How good is their communication system? Do they respond to emails? Do they return your calls? Do they really answer your questions and handle your concerns in an understanding way? Do they actually answer the phone? We were recently contacted by a company who could not get in touch with their website hoster. We spent 3 days trying to do it; only managing, finally, by going through the 'back door'.

  1. Can the web hoster also handle your company email? Does it have webmail and mail forwarding as part of the package, or does it charge extra? How many email accounts do you get? Combining web hosting and email in one company can be an effective and efficient way to proceed, providing it's done well!
  1. If you want online trading, can the web hoster handle a 'back-end' system, with ColdFusion or other reputable e-commerce software?
  1. Finally, what sort of pricing system do they have? In most circumstances, web hosting should not be expensive. Indeed, a small company, with a site of less than 10Mb and only three email accounts, can get reliable hosting for £6 per month.

By the way, it's a myth that your web hoster needs to be local. It really doesn't matter where your server is, so long as you're on the same planet! The site you're on right now is based in the US. The only factors that matter are the range of service, the quality of service and price.
